The miracle of "Madonna dei Cordici"
On 3 March 1799 under Barons Vespasiano Palamolla and Teresa Moscati something extraordinary happened that changed the fortunes of the small town of Torraca.
The inhabitants of Torraca was threatened by the French that ,after having conquered and devastated neighbouring countries, went to the village. The inhabitants, desperate, met in church and prayed Madonna dei Cordici.
The prayer was heard. Suddenly a dark and dense fog enveloped the village making it invisible at the sight of the enemy that went beyond. It is said that the face of Madonna dei Cordici and the arm of Jesus began to sweat after the failed attack of the French.
Some years later, on the 4th of August 1806, during the feast of San Domenico, the French of General Massena, having ruined the Baronale Castle, stealing paintings, statues and precious objects, destroyed by a fire the archive of the parish church.
Documents, records and parchments of great historical importance were lost.
Since then, twice a year, on the 3rd of March and on the 8th of September it is celebrated Madonna dei Cordici.
During the celebrations people pray the famous “novena della Madonna dei Cordici”.
La novena della Madonna dei Cordici
A gruppi si andava ai Cordici
a settembre, di prima mattina,
appena dopo il levar del sole.
Si trotterellava insieme lieti
alla cauta ricerca dell’uva matura
e col desiderio in cuore di vendere
Eecomprare noci fresche e taralli buoni.
Il cammino era lungo ma o Muleinieddu
e la compagnia lo accorciavan di molto.
Lo splendido panorama di Sapri al sole
e i rintocchi della campana da chiesa
ci annunciavano vicina la meta finale
Un segno di croce e per molti di noi
il commercio s’apriva nella piazza
in declivio, da una quercia all’altra.
Nella linda Cappella, segno incancellabile
di devozione antica, la bella Madonna
veniva onorata con canti e preghiere.
Nella valle di lacrime si spandevano
le note vetuste di dolci inni a Maria.
Un’ultima corsa per prendere l’acqua
“davvero un filino in una grigia lamiera”
E poi, al paese a goder la giornata!
